On March 13–14, an international symposium titled “Global Perspectives in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Thyroid Cancer” was held in Baku, organized jointly by the National Oncology Center, the Azerbaijan Society of Oncologists, and the Azerbaijan Society of Nuclear Medicine. The event brought together leading local and international experts and attracted significant professional interest.

During the opening ceremony, Professor Aziz Aliyev highlighted the continuous state support for the development of oncology in the country and presented key achievements in clinical activity, including surgical, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy services. Scientific sessions featured presentations by international and local experts on radioactive iodine therapy, theranostic risk stratification, and emerging clinical approaches in thyroid cancer management.

The symposium also included practical masterclasses held on March 13 at the Sechenov University Baku филиал, focusing on ultrasound-guided thyroid biopsy, lymph node assessment, and modern classification systems. Society Overview

Founded in 2014, ASNM-is an apolitical, non-profit organization dedicated to strengthening cancer care service, molecular imaging and awareness in Azerbaijan.

It has grown to become a well known imaging and society in the world and hosts one of the biggest and most innovative scientific meetings in Azerbaijan.

The Society works closely with national radiological societies across Europe and further afield while establishing relationships with major European and international organizations from other related fields.

It also monitors developments on the EU level which could have an impact on research and practice in nuclear medicine, with the best interests of the patient as its overriding goal.

Dr. Fuad Novruzov, MD, PhD is a president of society for the 2021-2025 period and the national delegate at European Association of Nuclear Medicine.

    The ASNMs vision is to optimize and advance science and education in nuclear medicine for the benefit of public health and humanity within the concept of personalized healthcare. The ASNM acts as the umbrella organization for individuals as well as national societies.

    ASNM strives to be a leader in unifying, advancing and optimizing molecular imaging, with an ultimate goal of improving human health. ASNM represents nuclear and molecular imaging professionals, all of whom are committed to the advancement of the field.

  • Goal

    The goal of the ASNM is to be a platform for the dissemination and discussion of the latest results in the field of nuclear medicine including multimodality imaging, treatment and prevention of diseases through the use of unsealed radioactive substances and the properties of stable nuclides in medicine.

History and Background

The ASNM was founded in October, 2014, in Baku.

The first Nuclear Medicine Symposium took place on April 16, 2016, in Baku. Representatives from Azerbaijan's medical community and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) attended the event, which began with a video presentation of the new center. The symposium featured presentations on the current state of nuclear medicine, future prospects, and the latest cancer treatment methods.

The second - symposium about Neuroendocine Tumors on February 18, 2017, focused on neuroendocrine tumors. Local and foreign experts discussed and shared experiences on new methods. The symposium helped expand the center's activities and international recognition.

Symposium dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic in May 2018 showcased Azerbaijan's medical achievements internationally.

The fourth symposium on February 2, 2019, dedicated to World Cancer Day, included experts from Azerbaijan, Austria, Switzerland, and Turkey. Discussions covered the current state of nuclear medicine and the latest methods in cancer prevention and treatment.

The 5th Azerbaijan Oncology and Nuclear Medicine Symposium was held on July 6 in Baku with participation of leading experts from Azerbaijan, the USA, Germany, the Netherlands, Turkey, and other countries. Discussions focused on the current state and future prospects of nuclear medicine, as well as the latest approaches in cancer prevention and treatment. The symposium highlighted the growing role of nuclear medicine in modern healthcare and served as an important platform for international knowledge and experience exchange.

The International Symposium on Radiopharmaceutical Therapy – ISRT 2025, held in Baku, brought together leading global experts to present recent advances in radionuclide therapy for cancer. Organized jointly by WARMTH and ASNM, the event focused on modern diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, multidisciplinary collaboration, and the clinical effectiveness of radionuclide-based treatments. Key presentations highlighted innovations such as combination therapies integrating immunotherapy, targeted agents, and interventional procedures, demonstrating improved patient outcomes and reinforcing the role of theranostics in contemporary oncology.

Activity

The ASNM has produced a series of cancer awareness videos aimed at educating the public about early detection, prevention, and treatment options. These videos feature experts discussing various types of cancer, their symptoms, and the latest advancements in medical technology to improve patient outcomes.

The ASNM has provided specialized training programs in nuclear medicine for 15 international trainees from Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, focusing on both diagnostic imaging and radionuclide therapy. These programs combined theoretical lectures with hands-on clinical practice, enabling participants to gain practical skills in modern nuclear medicine techniques and fostering regional collaboration and knowledge exchange in this rapidly evolving field.
